Just a few suggestions for Sale/Wanted postings:
1) List the make and model of the item with as much detail and accuracy as possible. "Yamaha alto sax, YAS-23" is MUCH more informative than just "Yamaha alto sax" or nothing more than "Yamaha sax." A reader may want to know if you are offering a student horn (like a YAS-23) or a pro horn (like an 82Z or YAS-62).
2) List the serial number if possible -- particularly if it's a "vintage" horn. Some buyers are interested only in certain serial number ranges of certain horns. You can attract an interested buyer, or save time if the buyer wasn't interested in that serial number anyway. By the way -- You don't have to state the entire serial number. (We can discuss reasons for this another time.) But say the serial number is 103,561. You can say 103xxx. Approximate serial numbers are fine.
3) Say something about the condition. Ready to gig and needs nothing? Playable but needs a tweak here and a pad there? Needs a shop visit to get into playing condition? Is Roadkill and suitable only as a lamp or wall ornament? Be up front about this. Most buyers know that any horn they buy will likely need a shop visit before taking it out on a gig, so no big deal if it's not pristine.
4) Post pictures, or a link to pictures. Most potential buyers will ask for pics anyway. It's especially important to post pics if you are not 100% sure what the horn is.
5) State a sales price. You probably have a figure in mind. Please state it. Makes it easier for you to find a buyer interested in the item for the price you want to get.
6) Say where the item will ship from. This is very important. For one thing, you may have a potential buyer near enough to you to avoid shipping. A buyer may be able to come see it in person, and that's often preferred. Otherwise, a buyer wants to know if the item is two states away, across the country, or overseas.
Why all this detail? If a potential buyer is scanning dozens of ads, he's more likely to bypass an ad lacking these details than fire off an inquiry. Usually too much trouble! But if you provide the above details, something in the description may catch his interest.
I've noticed many of the ads here have a decent amount of detail, but more would help. At least we're not as bad as Craig's List, where a TYPICAL ad may read, "For Sale: Saxophone. $250." Ha!
