My daughter is considering trying the alto sax at school. She is also in her second year of piano lessons. I am unfamiliar with sax music, but play the piano and read piano music myself. Is music for the alto sax written in the same clef as piano (e.g., the treble clef)? I'm concerned about causing confusion if this is not the case.

Yes, the sax plays music written in treble clef (even the bass sax!), unfortunately the sax is a transposing instrument. As an example, the alto sax is an Eb horn. When it plays a C, it sounds like a concert Eb. This may not cause a problem unless your daughter has perfect pitch or you try to play untransposed duets. Either way, if her heart is in the sax, she can overcome these small difficulties. Mark Bushaw

Alto Sax Conversion: 12 up 3 down So if you see an A on the piano music go up an octave and down a third and you will end up on F sharp. That is the sax note.
