Hi John in N'Awlins....

A friendly suggestion...? If you have an eBay account, log in and do an advanced search on completed auctions for similar Selmer Series III altos. You can get an idea of how much they are currently selling for used.

Not saying your implied asking price of $3000 to $4000 is outrageous or anything, but if you can get a better look at the current market price for these horns, you won't be as disappointed if someone comes along offering you less than you were originally expecting.

Just saying.

In general, it's best to state a sales price, rather than a range. If the asking price is reasonable, you are more likely to get a buyer. If the horn is in outstanding shape and you are asking top dollar, pictures, or a link to pictures, will help seal the deal.

Hope that helps, and good luck.

Thank you for the advice Steve. It was my father's sax and is in excellent shape. I also have a Conn Stars and Stripes that is in excellent shape. I will likely put it up on ebay this weekend.

On another note, I want to make sure I am identifying the Selmer correctly. It is gold, has a lot of engraved design on the bell area, it says Selmer Paris Serie III, and the serial number is in the 641XXX range. Would that be a Selmer Paris Super Action 80 Series III? It doesn't state any other part of the item number such as "80" or "62A" or anything on the sax itself.

Thank you for your help.

Hi John -- Serie III (French), Series III (English), and Super Action 80 Series III are all correct, and that is an accurate way to describe the horn.

If it's in good shape, you should get a decent price for it -- maybe $2500 to $3000. But who knows? Depends partly on what else is for sale while your auction is going on. Might get more.

The Conn "shooting stars" horn is a student sax, and usually worth a few hundred, depending on condition.
