Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings are a soul funk Brooklyn based 10 member band, that are worth looking into.
The band is made up of Sharon Jones on vocals Gabriel Roth on bass, Neil Sugarman on sax along with core members of the Mighty Imperials and the Soul Providers.
Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings - The Dap Dip
There first album was released in 2002 by daptone records (headed by the same Gabriel Roth) and was called Dap Dippin with Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings an album full of tight drums and funky grooves.
Performing Marva Whitney’s “Things Got To Get Better”. “Naturally” record release show, Brooklyn NY - 1/21/05.
In their next album, Naturally, They have a crispier cleaner sound, but still keep to 100% soul, also it is a very varied album and even without all its other strong points (funky piano solo’s, great Ballads and Punchy horn arrangements) and on that alone it can hold your interest.
“100 Days, 100 Nights” by Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings
My favorite however is 100 Days, 100 Nights. As Eclectic grooves says
100 Days, 100 Nights has a decidedly more straight ahead soul sound to it than it’s predecessors, there is no denying that it is a contemporary soul classic with a vintage sound. Most listeners will be hard pressed to guess what year this record was released, as every detail from the cover artwork to the analog production is done in a tastefully retro fashion.
Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings are like good wine - The longer you wait for them the better, but at any point in time they are quite delicious
