Hi folks! I've been asked to perform on an up-coming gig - and one of the tunes that the band has decided to perform is the song 'Respect' by Aretha Franklin.

We've rehearsed a couple of times... but, I need some help from you guys.

The sax solo starts out in G# major... can anyone give me an idea what the notes are for the first couple of bars for the solo? I've tried to lift it off the record - but I can't seem to get my head around it. I figure as long as I have an idea of the first couple of bars of the solo, I can handle the rest. Please help.

Sincerely, Karsten J. Chikuri

Try Ab major. I never heard of G# major. That may be your problem. BTW , you are listening to King Curtis

That solo is a bitch !!! I've fumbled it many times (and in many keys)..... the thing starts in G#m and the notes in the 1st phrase are....

g# b c# d# f# d# g# b c# g#

the second is in C# .. ..

f g# a# c# d# c# a# f f e d# c#

3rd in G#m again ... same notes as first ... and the last in A .... is wicked .. phrasing impossible to notate (IMO)..

If you're deliberately trying to be an ass, quit it. I deal with enough asses on the gig.

Human error:

I meant to say > A G# diminished scale would have a D, not a D#,

Seems to be a lot of hot air about this solo; why not just actually try trascribing it?

Although it sounds like a tenor, it is actually an alto-the transcription will tell you this much.

Concert pitch the chords are F#m, B7, F#m, G7.

The solo essentially uses the arpegios from these chords with additional minor 3rd inflections.

If you want a copy of the transcription, give me your email and I will send it. These rhythms can be transcribed!!!

Drummer Boy, that's so kind of you.

However.. half a year has passed since this request so I hope the initiator of this thread found what he was looking for.

Still, I am sure other members here might want to take you up on your offer

Drummer boy it is a tenor solo. I play both alto and tenor and every real sax player knows it's a tenor.

It is a TENOR solo (not alto)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_Curtis

Curtis Ousley (February 7, 1934 - August 13, 1971), who performed under the name King Curtis, was an American tenor, alto, and soprano saxophonist.

KC played tenor too.
