tinny sound why

HI found this site by accident and it's ok some good ideas, i have ben playing alto and tenor for about ten years on and off and struggling to get the sound i like the most with the rasp heard so often like "gee baby"(peter shelley) i don't practice enough but the sound eludes me, mine sounds like a strangled trumpet, my tenor is a yamaha 275 and the alto is a buffet i play a no6 mouthpiece on the alto and a 7 on the tenor, i have just recently got into vandored v16 2-2 1/2 reeds, any help with producing the raspy sound would make my day! (tried the humming a different note and it took me a day to stop laughing over the sounds i got)keep up the good work,cheers.
