Hello, I recently started playing sax again after a 4 year break. I had played for 8 years in middle and high school and have had only limited exposure to Jazz music. I was wondering what are some good ways to get started with jazz/improv. I've picked up The Jazz Theory Book by Levine, and it is a wonderful reference, but it's not very useful for someone just starting out. Are there other books that might be more helpful, should I try to find some nightclubs that play live music, should I get private lessons. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks,

I recommend that you check into the Jamey Aebersold jazz play-along sets. You get a book of music and a CD (or tape if you prefer) with a rhythm section playing the selections in the book so you can play along. There are dozens of play-along sets in the series, at all levels from beginner on up. A good one for you to start with would be Volume 1

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll definitely check it out. Another question for the infinite wisdom of the alt.music.saxophone newsgroup, how does one go about finding a good teacher? I'm currently living in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area and new to the music scene in this area. Thanks,

go to a reputable music store, and ask who is a good jazz saxophone instructor for a beginning jazz player.

Why don't you start by doing a transcription of a solo you are somewhat familiar with? Let me know if you need help.
